Nestling in a valley of pine, eucalyptus and cork oaks we were delighted to discover Cerejeira. Charmingly refurbished, the local owners have taken care to incorporate such original features as whitewashed walls, natural stonework, oak beams and pretty country furnishings into their thoughtful restoration of this inviting cottage. The accommodation comprises three floors with an open plan living area on the ground floor a kitchen and a bathroom. On the lower level there is a bedroom with double bed and windows affording pretty views out over the valley. An open tread, wooden staircase leads from the living room to a mezzanine, where an additional bedroom with twin single beds has been created below the sloping eaves. Outside, the terrace is spacious with an attractive private pool, barbecue area and marvellous views across the valley. Keen walkers will be interested to learn that the surrounding forest is dotted with a number of footpaths and rural trails along which regular walks are organised from Monchique towards Fóia and Picota. Cerejeira would be an excellent choice for a couple on a romantic break or, perhaps, for those who wish to enjoy nature, as there is an abundance of local wildlife to spot in and around the wooded hillside. Monchique centre (3.5km) is home to a daily market (Mon-Sat), which offers a wealth of fresh regional produce, while restaurants serving local fare such as chicken piri-piri, kid, game and wild boar are plentiful. Also within easy distance is the spa town of Caldas da Monchique, source of the famous natural spring and a place, which has since Roman times, attracted visitors looking to drink or bathe in the soothing waters. Despite an impression that you are high up in the hills, one of the Algarve's prettiest fishing villages, Ferragudo as well as various sandy beaches are just 30 minutes' drive away.
Please Note: A compulsory breakage fee of £4 per person is payable in advance.
