Roughly halfway between Florence and Pisa, there is small sleepy hilltop village called Sorano. It makes up one of the ten 'villages of Pescia', a delightful collection of similarly high villages that straddle precipitous valleys covered in chestnut trees and terraced with olive groves. Winding streets, narrow alleyways, and small piazzas characterise these places and Sorano’s main Piazza San Pietro hosts events most Saturdays during the summer. A short walk from here is Casa Belvedere. A three-level house that overlooks a stunning valley-panorama from one of its sides, as its name suggests. Very comfortable and nicely decorated and furnished, it is a great holiday house for four or five people.
There are essential shops, banks and chemists in Pescia 20 minutes away, even more in Montecatini 40 minutes away, not to mention its spas, the Tettuccio being its grandest, or take the historical funicular up to Montecatini Alto, a great day out all in all. Pisa, and its airport, is one hour away. Cars in Sorano are required to park in one of two car parks, one above and the other below the village, both just a short walk away. Being a peaceful relaxed place, there is a bar open in the summer months but not much else.
