A former Norman tower dating back to the 11th century, then inhabited by a Knight of Malta in the second half of the 17th century, the masseria has been brought into the present day in style. Approached from the road through a magnificent baroque portal bearing a coat of arms, the house frames one side of an attractive courtyard, ideal for al fresco dining, which in turn leads through impressive wrought iron gates to a second larger courtyard that surrounds a 14m x 7m infinity swimming pool and spacious areas for sunbathing and relaxing. All the rooms in the house have superb vaulted ceilings, both ‘star’ and ‘bottle’ vaults, and the floors throughout are of natural ancient limestone flags. All the ground floor rooms, with the exception of the twin bedroom, open directly onto the courtyard. The kitchen is newly fitted with a dining area at one end of the room and a large oak dining table. It adjoins the sitting room which is sited on the ground floor of the original tower, kept beautifully cool by its 1.5 metre thick walls. Here there are elegant antique leather chairs to relax in and the room is benignly watched over by a black panther, Baghera, an original sculpture in bronze. Each of the four bedrooms has an attractive en-suite bathroom (all with showers). A fine stone staircase leads to the first floor and to a large west facing terrace, the perfect spot to enjoy cocktails while watching the sun go down. The spacious first floor bedroom, with four poster bed, also has its own study and balcony. The masseria has 360 degree views across olive groves to the coast, with the mountains of Corfu and Albania visible on a clear day. The nearest sandy beaches of the Adriatic are only 8km from the property and only 13 km away is the historic port of Otranto. The nearest village (or small town) is historic Carpignano for provisions and restaurants while only half an hours drive from the property is the attractive baroque city of Lecce for larger shops. The area in general has an enormous choice of restaurants and cafes to suit every palette and pocket.
