This is a distinctive 15th Century chateau, which has been comprehensively refurbished to a very high standard, providing comfortable, yet elegant accommodation sleeping 16. A further 6 people can be accommodated in the Coach House. It is set in 6 acres of grounds, and is surrounded by an 8 foot high wall, offering complete privacy. It is accessed by electric gates with camera surveillance, which can be opened by remote control, or from either the Chateau or Coach House.
The Chateau is set over 3 floors and has a wonderful airy and spacious feel to it, as the ceilings on both the ground and first floors are over 12 feet high.
On the ground floor, entrance into a two-storey central flagstoned hallway, with a magnificent crystal chandelier. To the left of the hallway is the double aspect reception room, with a limestone floor inset with oak, and walls covered in silk tissue tondue. The large Louis XVI mirror hanging above the working fireplace and the crystal chandelier, add to the elegance of the room. To one side of this is a small library/card room, and on the other side is a television room. Off this is a study, which leads to the rear hall with a cloakroom and a fully-equipped shower room.
To the right of the hallway, is the dining room, with a slate floor with oak inserts, walls covered in silk tissue tondue, and a Louis XVI mirror above the marble fireplace, as well as a table seating 16. Next to this is the south and west facing, breakfast room, with limestone floor and a refectory table seating up to 14, which can be extended to accommodate up to 24. French doors lead to the terrace, which has a lovely fountain, teak garden furniture, two very large sun umbrellas and an outside dining table which seats up to 10 people. There is a passage leading from the breakfast room to the kitchen, the rear circular staircase and the main hallway. The kitchen is spacious and has been exceptionally well-equipped with granite work tops, a centre island, 2 ovens, gas hobs, griddle, open fireplace with rotating spit, 2 dishwashers, 3 fridges, washing machine, tumble dryer and microwave. A passage leads to a cloakroom and the back garden.
The first floor is reached either by the main staircase or by the circular staircase in the tower. There are four spacious double bedrooms, each with king size beds, open fireplaces, and walls covered in gold silk tissue tondue. All of them have full bathrooms en suite, and three have either a dressing room or walk-in closet. On the second floor, accessed via the tower staircase, there is a further spacious bedroom with four-poster king size bed and full bathroom en suite. There are another three twin bedrooms which share a further shower room. Also on the second floor is a large carpeted family room equipped with nursery kitchen.
Coach House: The separate coach house, has also been fully restored retaining its original exposed beams, and high ceiling on the ground floor. There is a spacious and very light open-plan kitchen/living/dining room with windows on three sides, a dining table seating 6, satellite television, video, stereo and comfortable sofas, one of which is a sofa bed. The kitchen is modern and has been fully equipped with dishwasher, full gas/electric cooker, microwave, coffee maker, food processor, fridge, washing machine and tumble dryer, as well as a breakfast bar. Doors also lead from the living area into the adjacent conservatory, also with comfortable seating. There is a cloakroom at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the first floor bedrooms with a further cloakroom on the first floor. There are two twin bedrooms, and a double bedroom with king size bed. They share a separate full bathroom. The coach house also has its own private gardens.
Chapel: Next to the Chateau is a fully restored chapel, with an impressive underlit ceiling, which is available for weddings celebrations and large receptions. Close to this, there are steps into the ground, which lead to a tunnel, reputed to be 2kms long leading to an Abbey. The tunnel is out of bounds.
Orangery: Opposite the Chateau is the south-facing Organgery which overlooks the swimming pool, measuring approximately 15m x 7m. It has 4 large glass double doors that lead to the patio surrounding to the pool. It has been beautifully restored, and has retained the original stone walls, a lovely high ceiling, and limestone floor. There is a kitchen with fridge, with small freezer compartment, 2-ring electric hob, microwave, dishwasher and sink. There is also a cloakroom and a shower room. There is a gas barbecue on the terrace and there are ample tables, chairs, sun loungers and sun umbrellas. There is also a banana tree, which has been known to produce fruit, depending on the weather. An all-weather tennis court is being built over the winter of 2004, along with a petanques pitch.
There is an elaborate rose garden with over 6,000 roses, including specimens from Japan. It can be lit at night, and there are arches, canals and fountains, as well as benches throughout for relaxing and enjoying the garden. There is a pond with a small waterfall in the grounds of the Chateau, as well as a fruit orchard and a vegetable garden.
Chateau de Detilly is perfect for a relaxing holiday just soaking up the atmosphere and exploring the grounds. If you want to explore this wonderfully attractive and historic part of France you will be spoilt for choice.
