The property is a few kilometres to the northwest of St Hippolyte-du-Fort in the southeast portion of the Cévennes wilderness with some wonderful walks immediately to hand. Here, the scenery remains green and it is cooler in the summer heat owing to the steep forested valleys which Rudyard Kipling once explored on his donkey. Despite its tranquil setting, the property is not isolated but overlooks several old farmhouses in the valley, including the owners’ mas immediately below. The area is at the centre of the revival of the French silk industry and the silk museum at St Hippolyte-du-Fort is worth a visit. The village also has basic shops plus traditional cafés and restaurants. The town of Alès is 30 minutes from the property and has all modern facilities. The ancient ducal city of Uzès lies further afield but is recommended for shopping and browsing in its beautiful historic town centre.
Access to the property is via a cobbled terrace, to this converted bergerie with its swimming pool (7m x 4m x 1.6m maximum depth) and solarium to the side; this provides a fine view over the countryside from its terraced position on the hillside. You enter into a large living room which comprises a dining area and sitting area with large beams and thick stone walls and a TV, DVD and CD. Doors lead from the living room into a small fitted kitchen with dishwasher, cooker plus microwave and into a separate WC. Stairs lead down from the living room to the floor below. A central corridor serves a bathroom/WC and washing machine, a twin bedroom and a double bedroom. The latter has a payphone plus a socket for a computer and a door to a small stone terrace beneath a large old fig tree to the side. The property has electric heating.
