Etchegoyenborda is a Basque term meaning 'big house on the hill', an apt name for this lovely property. Surrounded by meadows, fields of corn (in season) and woodland, this attractive creamy yellow painted house sits on one of the gentle undulating hills in this pretty corner of Le Béarn, near the foothills of the Pyrénées and the Spanish border. As you reach the brow of the hill, Etchegoyenborda can be seen, an impressively large building dating back to the 18th Century. Part of the property has been restored and is now a spacious and comfortable home, decorated and furnished in an attractive, contemporary style. In the kitchen, streamlined wood units sit well against the white walls and tiled floor, creating a modern look that continues through to the living room. The second and third floors each have two bedrooms and a bathroom, a layout eminently suitable for a group of friends or large family. Here, the smart contemporary bathrooms and the clean, simple lines of the bedroom furniture echo the modern feel of the ground floor. Splashes of colour come from the interesting original artwork that decorates the walls throughout the house. A door from the living room opens out onto the garden which merges into the surrounding fields. The pool, situated on a slightly raised level, is positioned to capture the sun and the sweeping views across the countryside. The ample grounds (1.2 hectares) extend into the woodland behind the house, a setting surely appreciated by walkers and nature lovers as an invitation to explore from your own doorstep. There is plenty to see and do in the area: white water rafting and world class salmon fishing in the nearby rivers, beautiful sandy beaches around Biarritz (1 hour by car), the fortified towns of Sauveterre (15km) and Navarrenx (22km), the interesting town of St Jean-Pied-de-Port (38km) are just a few suggestions. Closer to home, the small town of St Palais offers all amenities and a Friday morning market.
