The River Célé winds its way through a striking and unspoilt valley of fields and vineyards, with high limestone cliffs flanking each side. At the centre of this hidden valley lies the tiny hamlet of Monteils and amidst the higgledly-piggledly cluster of stone houses and barns the recently restored Le Temps Perdu is to be found. Clever use of space around Le Temps Perdu has created three areas in which to relax: a terrace at the entrance captures the morning sun; the pool area is to the rear of the house; whilst a couple of steps across the lane by the entrance, a private lawned garden. The interior is as characterful as the exterior with many original features still apparent. The ancient bread oven and stone sink on the front terrace, the large walk-in fireplace in the living room and the exposed stone walls and wood door frames are echoes of the past but be assured that today's comforts have not been forgotten, with solid oak furniture, a leather sofa and a well equipped kitchen. A restaurant and a few small shops can be found in Marcilhac-sur-Célé (3km), an appealing village on the banks of the river with an impressive ruined abbey at its heart. Follow a scenic route through the countryside and the stunning village of St Cirq-Lapopie (20km) soon appears, a cascade of stone houses clinging to the hillside. The village has attracted many artists over the years, drawn by its outstanding beauty. Nearby, the 'Grotte du Pech Merle', a network of caves decorated with fascinating wall paintings, makes for an interesting detour.
